Milky Toner
The first layer, poured slow. Hydration, ceramides, calm.
A lightweight, lotion-like leave-on positioned between a conventional aqueous toner and a fluid emulsion — hydration and stratum-corneum barrier support immediately after cleansing.
Barrier-focused active system
Sodium Hyaluronate (0.1–0.5 %, 800 kDa – 1.2 MDa) — viscoelastic surface hydration reservoir, reinforces the natural moisturising factor pool, works synergistically with glycerin and butylene glycol without tackiness.
On skin: a still, plumped surface — hydration held without any of the tack that a single-humectant formula tends to leave.
Centella Asiatica — standardised to madecassoside and asiaticoside. Suppresses NF-κB nuclear translocation and pro-inflammatory cytokine cascades; asiaticoside stimulates type I collagen synthesis in dermal fibroblasts.
On skin: the small heat of post-cleansing reactivity settles almost immediately.
Lactobacillus Ferment (maltodextrin fermented) — postbiotic short-chain lactic acid oligomers, low-molecular-weight peptides, cell-wall fragments and exopolysaccharides. Selectively supports commensals (notably S. epidermidis).
On skin: the balanced, uncrowded feel of a barrier that has been fed rather than stripped.
Ceramide Complex NP + AP + EOP with phytosphingosine, cholesterol and behenic acid. Reconstitutes the stratum-corneum lamellar bilayer; EOP is the linker ceramide covalently binding to the cornified envelope.
On skin: the barrier reads whole again — softer to the touch, less porous to the next step in the routine.
Why this emulsifier for this product
The K-beauty milky-toner brief asks for near-instant absorption, minimal residue and a finish that reads as skin, not product — and the sensory panel handed the modified starch exactly that profile: the fastest absorption rate of the three (6.5), the lowest residual amount (3.6), and a powdery after-feel none of the other systems produced. The starch also reaches meaningful viscosity at low oil fractions, which is what allowed the whole formulation to sit on a lean ~8% oil phase rather than the 20–30% a conventional emulsion would need. Reducing the emulsifier from 5% to 2.5% is what makes the format lotion-light; the slight centrifuge phase-separation at that concentration is consistent with the known behaviour of the ingredient at reduced dose, and acceptable for a low-viscosity leave-on. Xanthan Gum Crosspolymer-2 provides the viscoelastic matrix that carries the ceramide and postbiotic actives without weighing the toner down.
